This is a tutorial for Goldeneye 007. For an outline of the strategies used in this tutorial, see the main level page.

Overview

Surface 1 is notoriously a highly luck dependent level with a fairly low skill element. The central difficulty is the 4 spawning guards who chase you throughout the level and can snipe you from distant and unseen positions.

It is generally considered a hard level, often being the last one people complete, purely because it is frustrating and a true test of patience.

General Completion Notes

Spawning Guards

There are 4 spawning guards who will chase you throughout the level. They spawn with Klobbs or Sniper Rifles. The Klobbs are generally not problematic, however the snipers are deadly from great distances. If you eliminate one such guard, another will spawn to replace him, so camping for them early in the level is not possible.

Satellite Tower Strategy

It is generally considered safest to take a slow path to completion (generally >5mins). By hugging the far left of the level to go immediately to the satellite tower. This keeps Bond as far from the snipers as possible and provides a good chance of getting to the Tower (c20% under testing).

Once in the Tower, standing on the external stairs, it is possible to group up anywhere between 1 and 4 of the spawning guards underneath you. From here you can safely snipe 4 of the patrolling KF7 guards to clear the level a bit. The aim is to gather as many spawn guards in one place so that you can outrun them as you proceed through the level in a fairly normal manner. It does not always work, but if you have at least 3 guards by the Tower you have a very strong chance.

Conventional Strategy

The conventional strategy follows a similar route to that taken in 00 Agent, although can run around the back of the barrel hut, and uses the grenade launcher on the way back. This method has been reported to be relatively consistent, but has a high dependency on good spawn position of the 4 guards.
